    Liquid-liquid equilibria of UCON + (sodium or potassium) phosphate salt aqueous two-phase systems at 23 °C

    Six phase diagrams for UCON−phosphate salt aqueous two-phase systems (ATPSs), at 23 °C, are presented. The ATPSs were obtained combining UCON (a random copolymer of 50 % ethylene oxide and 50 % propylene oxide) and a phosphate salt (KH2PO4, K2HPO4, potassium phosphate buffer pH = 7, NaH2PO4, Na2HPO4, and sodium phosphate buffer pH = 7). Among the salts used, Na2HPO4 proved to be the most effective in ATPS formation, providing the greatest heterogeneous region in the phase diagram. The previous established relation between the anion valence and the concentration needed to form a biphasic system was confirmed: higher valence requires lower concentration. Na+ salts require, in all cases, lower concentration to form ATPSs than the corresponding K+ salts.     Assessment of Organophosphorus Pesticide Residues in Water and Sediment Collected from the Southern Caspian Sea

    Pollution of water resources by uncontrolled pesticide use is a serious health and environmental issue. In this study, concentrations of three organophosphorus pesticides (diazinon, malathion, and azinphos-methyl) in water and sediment samples from five estuaries (Sefidrud, Chalus, Babolrud, Tajan, and Gorganrud) along the Caspian Sea were investigated. Samples were collected from surface water and sediment during summer to autumn, and pesticides were analysed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Results indicated that salinity and turbidity in Gorganrud were higher (salinity: range 2–8%; turbidity: range 1–9%) compared to other stations. Higher diazinon (water: 0.08±0.06, sediment: 0.04±0.01), malathion (water: 0.09±0.06, sediment: 0.05±0.01) and azinphos-methyl (water: 0.1±0.08, sediment: 0.06± 0.02) concentrations were observed in the Tajan river compared to other stations. Mean concentrations of diazinon, malathion and azinphos-methyl pesticides were higher in the summer compared to the autumn. Azinphos-methyl concentrations were higher than sediment quality guidelines (SQGs), which warrants ongoing monitoring. Our research provides insights into the presence of organophosphate pesticides (OPs) in rivers that enter into the Caspian Sea. Further work to better understand the environmental pollution of OPs in the Caspian Sea is ongoing

    Escaping the Big Brother: an empirical study on factors influencing identification and information leakage on the Web

    This paper presents a study on factors that may increase the risks of personal information leakage, due to the possibility of connecting user profiles that are not explicitly linked together. First, we introduce a technique for user identification based on cross-site checking and linking of user attributes. Then, we describe the experimental evaluation of the identification technique both on a real setting and on an online sample, showing its accuracy to discover unknown personal data. Finally, we combine the results on the accuracy of identification with the results of a questionnaire completed by the same subjects who performed the test on the real setting. The aim of the study was to discover possible factors that make users vulnerable to this kind of techniques. We found out that the number of social networks used, their features and especially the amount of profiles abandoned and forgotten by the user are factors that increase the likelihood of identification and the privacy risks

    Studying Fake News via Network Analysis: Detection and Mitigation

    Social media for news consumption is becoming increasingly popular due to its easy access, fast dissemination, and low cost. However, social media also enable the wide propagation of "fake news", i.e., news with intentionally false information. Fake news on social media poses significant negative societal effects, and also presents unique challenges. To tackle the challenges, many existing works exploit various features, from a network perspective, to detect and mitigate fake news. In essence, news dissemination ecosystem involves three dimensions on social media, i.e., a content dimension, a social dimension, and a temporal dimension.     The effect of salts on the liquid–liquid phase equilibria of PEG600 + salt aqueous two-phase systems

    Six new ATPSs were prepared by combining polyethylene glycol PEG600 with potassium citrate, dipotassium hydrogen phosphate, sodium formate, potassium formate, sodium sulfate, and lithium sulfate. Complete phase diagrams, including the binodal curve and three tie-lines, were determined at 23 °C. The experimental data obtained for the binodal curve were successfully adjusted to the Merchuk equation, and the reliability of tie-line data was confirmed using the equations suggested by Othmer–Tobias and Bancroft. The ability of each ion to induce ATPS formation was investigated. Na+ proved to be more effective in ATPS formation than K+ and Li+. For potassium salts, the order observed for the effectiveness of the anions was: HPO42– > C6H5O73– > HCO2–. Regarding the sodium salts, it was found that SO42– is clearly more effective than HCO2–. The position of the ions in the Hofmeister series and their free energy of hydration (ΔGhyd) were used to explain the ability of the ions to induce PEG salting-out. Furthermore, the effective excluded volume (EEV) of the salts was determined and the following order was found: Na2SO4 > K2HPO4 > Li2SO4 > K3C6H5O7 > NaCHO2 > KCHO2.     The effects of second-hand smoke on biological processes important in atherogenesis

    BACKGROUND: Atherosclerosis is the leading cause of death in western societies and cigarette smoke is among the factors that strongly contribute to the development of this disease. The early events in atherogenesis are stimulated on the one hand by cytokines that chemoattract leukocytes and on the other hand by decrease in circulating molecules that protect endothelial cells (ECs) from injury. Here we focus our studies on the effects of "second-hand" smoke on atherogenesis. METHODS: To perform these studies, a smoking system that closely simulates exposure of humans to second-hand smoke was developed and a mouse model system transgenic for human apoB(100 )was used. These mice have moderate lipid levels that closely mimic human conditions that lead to atherosclerotic plaque formation. RESULTS: "Second-hand" cigarette smoke decreases plasma high density lipoprotein levels in the blood and also decreases the ratios between high density lipoprotein and low density lipoprotein, high density lipoprotein and triglyceride, and high density lipoprotein and total cholesterol. This change in lipid profiles causes not only more lipid accumulation in the aorta but also lipid deposition in many of the smaller vessels of the heart and in hepatocytes. In addition, mice exposed to smoke have increased levels of Monocyte Chemoattractant Protein–1 in circulation and in the heart/aorta tissue, have increased macrophages in the arterial walls, and have decreased levels of adiponectin, an EC-protective protein. Also, cytokine arrays revealed that mice exposed to smoke do not undergo the switch from the pro-inflammatory cytokine profile (that develops when the mice are initially exposed to second-hand smoke) to the adaptive response. Furthermore, triglyceride levels increase significantly in the liver of smoke-exposed mice. CONCLUSION: Long-term exposure to "second-hand" smoke creates a state of permanent inflammation and an imbalance in the lipid profile that leads to lipid accumulation in the liver and in the blood vessels of the heart and aorta. The former potentially can lead to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and the latter to heart attacks
